These past few weeks have been packed with make up hours since we are getting close to the end, as well as preparing for the internship presentation. So far this month, I have logged in 27 hours with possible hours to be recorded on Thursday. This has been a fun experience so far. I'm seeing different injuries rather than just should injures as well as doing more in the gym watching rather than folding laundry in the laundry room. Thinking over the past few months of what I have learned from this experience I would have to say I've learned a decent amount of material. Skills I have learned are placement of electrodes, set up of ice and electrical stimulation (e-stim) on the body, how to clean rooms, disinfecting techniques after each patient, how to listen to the patient describe their pain in order to diagnose injury, different exercises used to strength injured area, and last but not least, how to fold towels properly. This will be a tough next couple weeks in trying to finish these hours and find time to write the 4-6 page paper that's due at the end of the term. I think I can do it, (with a lot of stress that lies ahead of me).

May Day rally and march
On May 1st Causa had its annual May Day march and rally. This year the march was very special because we were celebrating two grand victories for the Latino immigrant community: the passage of not one, but TWO bills! The first was tuition equity and the second is the driver's card bill. We created history on May 1st when the Governor came to the rally and signed the driver's card bill in front of the 3,000 people who were present. It was incredible and so inspiring to see what our immigrant rights movement has accomplished! Both bills took many years to pass, tuition equity took over 10 years and the driver's card took almost 4 years. Witnessing the movement's leaders and allies sit next to the Governor as he signed the bill was just extraordinary, it truly was a special and memorable moment for me.
Most of the legislators that are our allies and who supported the bill stood behind the Governor watching as he signed it. I think it was good that the legislators were part of the rally so they could see the support in the community for the bill. It's always important to put a face to an issue so one is able to put it into perspective.
At the rally, I was honored to be one of the key note speakers. I was asked to speak about where we have come, our accomplishments, and where we are going as far as our goals. I was very nervous because every other speaker is very charismatic and able to get the crowd excited when they speak. I am an introvert and don't like public speaking very much. Although I am passionate about the work I have been doing it is always intimidating to speak in Spanish in front of 3,000 native speakers. I think I did a good job though, I was able to get the crowd to chant along with me and was told by people that they liked my speech. All in all, it was a great day!

LeaderCast Event
Hey all!
Friday is the big day! Well... One of them anyway.
On Friday morning we will be heading over to Spirit Mountain Casino for the day to watch the Broadcast of Chick-fil-a Leadercast 2013. McMinnville Chamber of Commerce and Newberg Chamber of Commerce paired up to host this event at the casino, and we ended up on selling all but 4 tickets this year. That is a huge improvement from last year! It has been a tad stressful planning this all while I have been in school, but it has been a great experience. Also, since everything was finished (for the most part) I will be able to watch the event.
Next up... Turkey Trot! :)

Nearing the End!
Well it looks like we're nearing the end of our internships!
I have to say I'm a little sad, but excited because Sam has offered me a job to work at Cupcake Couture, so my fun can continue!
I've learned so much and I can't even believe it. I had the opportunity to learn a ton about merchandising, pricing, buying, and displays. We've had an awesome spring and I've probably spent way too much at Cupcake Couture, but I cannot get enough of the clothes.
It's been great for all my sorority sisters to be able to come in and visit me while I help them pick out clothes and make them look fabulous of course!
I've made some great relationships with the ladies at Cupcake and also the ladies at La Bella Casa, they're kind of like my crazy aunts in my Linfield family that I've created here at school! I will be sad to leave them in December! But I get to spend all summer with them so that will be an awesome time.
Saturday is Spring Fling on Third Street and I suggest everyone come down and check it out! Bring your moms and get an automatic 10% discount at Cupcake Couture and there is also 30% off our Jack and BB Dakota brands! There will also be lemonade, cookies, and old men serenading and giving out carnations! And plus it will be a beautiful weekend to roam Third Street!
Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and working hard!

Chemeketa Event
This weekend at Vista Hills we held a Chemeketa event to honor students that attend Chemeketa who receive funds from the Clint Foundation. The Clint Foundation is a big part of the motto at Vista. The Clint Foundation is a foundation that supports students who are first generation students at community and four year university schools. Proceeds from Vista help with the amount of sums that students receive who are a part of the Clint Foundation. This event was held to great awareness of the foundation, honor students from Chemeketa, and to hear about what ways the students are going to give back and "pay it forward" once graduated. My job was to meet and great people and pour glasses of three wines that we were tasting that day. It was a great chance for me to learn more about the foundation and meet members of the community. Finally, I got to meet the owners of Vista Hills, John and Nancy, for the first time. All in all it was a great event and I was glad to be a part of it!

SB 833 passed in the Senate plus trip to Washington DC
This week was busy, busy, busy. Our bill, SB 833 passed in the Senate! Huge accomplishment for us! Next, the bill will be voted on in the House this week and it will be off to the Governor's office for his signature. The Governor has expressed to Causa that he would like to sign the bill at our annual grand march and rally on May 1st, very exciting!
At the federal level, my work continued to advocate for a comprehensive immigration reform. I had coffee with the staff person who works with immigration issues from the office of Congresswoman Bonamici. I had a great time meeting with her and talking about the immigration reform bill's provisions that Causa likes and dislikes. It was good to hear from her what the Congresswoman thinks of the bill. Aside from the politics talk, I enjoyed speaking with her about our personal lives and why we are so interested in politics. I was able to relate more to her and I think the feeling was mutual. It's always great when you can build relationships with people to grow your network of contacts. Two days later, I saw her again at the Congresswoman's town hall meeting in Beaverton. The town hall meeting went great, we had about five or six of Causa's supporters there asking questions about the immigration reform which was good so that both the public and the Congresswoman knew it is a priority for the community.
I was also able to go to Washington DC this week with my mom and baby sister. We attended a briefing with all of the Oregon Congressional Delegation where a student from Willamette University presented a study about mixed-immigration status families. My mom and I shared our experiences living in such a family. Following the presentation, we had meetings with the office of two of Oregon's Congressmen. It was very powerful for me to see my mom give her input and voice her opinions with such confidence to the Congressmen staff. I loved seeing her feel empowered despite the language barrier being that she only speaks Spanish. I had been in other meetings with federal legislators before, but this one was special to me because I was able to advocate next to my mom and baby sister.

Crazy week
The week of the 15th was crazy at Causa. Our SB 833 bill that would give driver's cards to over 80,000 people in Oregon that currently cannot get a driver's license, was voted on by the Joint Ways and Means Committee. We had 17 legislative meetings in two days to check in with legislators that were either leaning yes or leaning no votes. It was very important that we meet with them for a second time to assure that our vote count was accurate for Friday's committee vote.
On Thursday, the subcommittee of Joint Ways and Means met and passed the bill. Then on Friday morning, the entire committee met and our bill was yet again passed. It was very exciting to see that the 3 months worth of work was paying off at the legislature. I am eager and hopeful to see that the bill will continue moving forward.

All Day at MACPT
Tomorrow's internship shift (or should I say the shift that begins in 7 hrs) will be an all day event from opening to close with a two hr break for my one class. This will allow me to gain many hours for my required amount of 90 hrs. Coming down to the wire, I'm trying to figure out what is needed for this upcoming presentation that we must present on the 1st. Do I talk about what I've been doing while at the clinic? If so, my presentation won't be that long since I basically do the same activities every time I go in and do my hours. I see the same people and see whether the patients have improved since the last time I saw them (a week later). Hopefully today will bring me some new patients so I can blog about them and learn different sport related injuries rather than shoulder, wrists, and knee injuries since I'm becoming a pro on those since they are the most common injuries I see while I intern.

Bridal Shower Bliss
This week at Vista I had the privilege of working a bridal shower!! This included helping set up the room, assisting the caterer, and manning the bar to pour glasses of wine for the guests. I greatly enjoyed working the event and it turned out that the bride was a recent graduate from Linfield! It was exciting to make the connections throughout the day. The previous day I worked on club shipments - hard work!!! I spent all day downstairs packing up boxes on boxes of wine to be sent out to our club members. I was surprised to see how many members Vista in fact has and the time and effort that goes into the shipments.
I'm going to start on the flyer this week so stay tuned for updates on that!
Happy Monday Linfield Interns!

The importance of networking and building relationships
Our driver's license bill was finally introduced and we began once again meeting with all the legislators both in the House and the Senate to check where they stood on the issue. Throughout all the appointments that I have been making I have learned the importance of having good networking skills. The legislators that are not sympathetic to our issues almost always ask for constituents of their districts to be present in our meetings with them as a way to make it nearly impossible for us to give them our two cents on the issue. Particularly with the ones from rural districts that are far away from Salem, asking for constituents is a polite way of saying that they will not support us and don't want us to waste their time by meeting.
However, because Causa has built great relationships with Latino communities throughout the state since its founding in 1995, I have had a lot of luck reaching out to contacts from the organization's network of allies. I am very grateful for our allies that have traveled from places like Eugene and Roseburg to the capitol in Salem so that we could keep appointments with legislators.
As an organization that does a lot of community organizing, having a good network is crucial in times like this. Especially when we want to show how much support the community gives to issues, having contact to our allies is very important for short-notice mass mobilizations. When we need advocates in certain areas it is a great tool to be able to pick up the phone and call someone because we know we can rely on them to be present at a legislative visit, town hall meeting, or rally and march.

Internship Nerves!
This weekend at Vista Hills I was in desperate need to communicate effectively with my supervisors - and I succeeded! I was extremely nervous about not being able to complete my hours so after talking with Kristi I went in with a plan of how I was going to complete my 90 hours even if that meant working on a project outside of the vineyard. I am confident now that I will complete my hours and I am very thankful for that. I worked in the tasting room this weekend and since the Dundee Hills Passport if currently happening the month of April we had a crowd of people all day Saturday. I enjoy when there are big groups of people so it keeps me busy and I get to gain more experience.

Tasting Room Craziness
This last weekend at Vista allowed me to not only work in the tasting room, but also be in charge of office work. I was in charge of calling a sign company on behalf of Vista and this responsibility showed me that I not only had the capabilities of handling such a task, but also that Vista trusted in me to accomplish what needed to be done. I worked the tasting room as well and we were extremely busy!! There is a Dundee Hills passport event happening that brings a larger crowd in on the weekends. We had a huge group that showed up on a double decker bus! It was a lot of pressure and
I felt that I was running around the whole time but once it calmed down I was pleased and proud of myself that I handled the big crowd. All in all it was a very good weekend at Vista Hills.

April at Cupcake Couture
Hello lovely interns!
It is definitely looking like spring at Cupcake Couture and I could not be more excited. I love spring and summer colors much more than fall and winter. Too much black in the fall and winter! So you could imagine how much fun it has been to receive all the new merchandise from LA in the past couple weeks.
There has been a ton of traffic coming in and out of the store the past couple shifts I have worked so it has been making the time fly by. I cannot believe how much of the new merchandise is flying out of the door. It has been crazy, but an awesome learning experience.
I am currently working on a buying project for next fall for our two primary lines, BB Dakota and Jack. This has been one of my most favorite things because I eventually would like to be a buyer for a company. I like to receive feedback from my roommates and peers on what they would like to see the store carry so that has been a definite learning experience. I had no idea how difficult it could be buying for a store because you want the products to sell and make a profit. You almost have to do a little bit of trend forecasting, which is exciting.
I'm also in contact with a woman about the fashion show coming up at the end of the month and I think that will be a great experience to partake in. I plan on completely taking on the project on my own iniative and seeing the project through to the end! And hopefully exciting result!
Hope some of you get a chance to stop in and see some of the bright and colorful pieces we just got in!
Have a wonderful week!

MACPT
So far at this internship, I have gain much experience in learning exercises for different parts of the body that will gain strength and range in motion. As of now, calculating my hours I have done so far, I'm going to have to pick up extra hours here and there throughout the week, rather than only intern 6 hours 1 day a week. I'm hoping I can plan this out and finish my hours by the due day of May 1st. With tennis coming to an end, I will have more hours in the week to catch up. This has been a great opportunity working with MACPT and I hope to continue working with them.

Causa's Advocacy Week
This week was very busy for Causa. It was our Latin@ advocacy week, we had over 300 Latin@s from all over the state come to the Capitol to advocate for the importance of a driver's license bill (SB833) to restore driver's licenses to over 80,000 undocumented people in the state. Our first day was dedicated to youth and Latin@ veterans. Our second day was our naturalization day where aspiring residents filled out their applications to become naturalized US citizens and were joined in their advocacy efforts by immigration attorneys. Our third day was dedicated to LGBT advocacy. Our fourth day was women's advocacy, and our fifth day was children and Latin@ business leaders advocacy.
All five days were dedicated to advocate for SB833 and to make sure we left the Capitol with a lasting impact. The advocates we brought from the community were able to meet with legislators and their chief-of-staff or legislative aides to discuss the importance of this bill. Parents, kids, and allies shared their concerns about not having access to driver's licenses for all persons and offered their solution to this problem. For those who had never been to the Capitol, this was a great and scary experience. I could relate with them about this a lot because that is how I felt at first when I began doing legislative visits with Causa.
Most of them had good first-time experiences during the visits but some of them were also exposed to the hostility we Latin@s sometimes face with legislators. Although I wish they wouldn't have had negative reactions to their messages, it was also beneficial because it allowed them to see first-hand that the work of a lobbyist/advocate is sometimes hard and disappointing. You won't always receive the reactions and answers you hope to hear or you might be told flat out that you are wrong and the legislator will never support you. At Causa we sometimes get impatient reactions from the community because they have not yet seen results with the driver's licenses bill. I think being at the Capitol and seeing that it isn't as easy and fast as one thinks allowed them to understand that as much as we might work hard and dedicate years to this struggle, we can't change the laws over night. It takes a lot of perseverance and collaboration among different actors to have success for such a controversial issue.

Vista Wedding Round 2
Sorry for the late blog but I left for Arizona directly after working the wedding at Vista Hills last Saturday the 23rd. With that being said... I again enjoyed the wedding atmosphere so much!! I worked the tasting room and helped prepare for the wedding we held later that evening. This wedding differed from the previous wedding the month before because the ceremony was held at our venue as well as the reception. This meant that preparation was more in depth and crucial to have the venue cleared for the reception as quickly as we could. I enjoyed the fast paced atmosphere and was also put in charge of the wedding planning duties - a responsibility I enjoyed greatly. Next, I plan on working with our wedding planner, Cat, to design a parking map of the surrounding area to get printed and laminated for events such as weddings, private gatherings, etc. I look forward to this task.

Tuition Equity bill passes in the Senate!
Yesterday the tuition equity bill we have been working on passed in the Senate! It will now head to the Governor's office to be signed and we are sure he will because he has stated publicly in a press conference that he will support it. This means that undocumented students will now be able to pay for a higher education at in-state tuition and not at international-rate tuition. It is a historic milestone for Oregon! This bill had been introduced time and time again for the past ten years and it is just amazing to know that after so many years of struggle it is finally going to become a reality.
The work I have done during the process of passing this bill was small compared to the huge effort that was accumulated towards it by different persons. It was a group effort through a coalition of the business sector, higher education, immigrant rights, and of course champion legislators like Representative Dembrow and Senator Courtney. I learned that for a sometimes controversial and emotional issue like this one, one must be very strategic in the way that you plan key steps of the legislative process. This bill had to be passed before another bill we are working on is introduced. Because both are somewhat contentious bills, we had to let tuition equity have its moment and then move on to our next project.
Nonetheless, I am so happy that undocumented students now have a chance to go to college! It felt really good to know that the efforts undocumented students made to "come out of the shadows" was not in vain. It was a great effort to share our personal stories to show legislators how much of an impact a lack of access to higher education has made in our lives. I hope that this momentum that has been gained in our work and community only keeps pushing us to continue striving for more positive change.

Getting advice from experienced lobbyists
I had the privilege to sit in a meeting with another organizer from Causa and several lobbyists regularly working at the Capitol building. I was able to pick up tips on how to get a legislator's attention about your bill right before he/she votes on the floor. It was really interesting to hear them talk about the deadlines to introduce a bill and the loopholes one can go through to work around the deadlines. It was a great experience because I was able to learn about ways to subtlety remind a legislator to keep your bill in mind meanwhile pointing out that an influential legislator supports your issue. At the meeting were some of Causa's allied organizations which made me realize that our priorities as an organization are being advocated by them as well. So when legislation is passed that will benefit Oregonians in their education, health, civil rights and equality, its usually the same group of people behind the scenes working the Capitol.
I also was able to be in a meeting with a Task-force that was created by the Governor that included immigrant rights organizations, agricultural business executives, food and lodging business executives, attorneys, faith community leaders, and law professors. It was a learning experience because we were talking about the language in a draft bill. I learned that language is very crucial in a bill because it could mean the difference between it gaining support from key legislators or not. Using the words "for the purpose of" could have unwanted consequences once the bill becomes law. Instead, a better way to state it would be "is intended to". In some cases, it is better to be vague about the language to allow discretionary room for the agency/institution/authority overlooking the law to interpret it in a way that is consistent with your views, but at the same time doesn't raise a red flag to a legislator who is influential and will be bringing more supportive votes with his/her vote.

Distributor Folders
This week at Vista I helped Adam with our distributor folders. This task involved putting together folders that contain information from Vista that will be sent to our distributors across the nation. The items that were included in these folders were spec sheets, vineyard map, wine list, etc. Putting together the folders was a learning experience because I again got to learn a side of the wine industry that I had no previous knowledge of. Adam is extremely helpful and was fun to work with. I only was needed on Friday afternoon but was able to get my hands on some videos that Adam suggested I watch to help me gain some valuable knowledge of the wine industry that I plan on watching in the near future.

16 hours 15 mins so far
So far this semester, I have documented 16 hours and 15 minutes worth of internship observations. Even though I feel behind in my hours due to tennis practices eating away at my possible hours, I plan to make up the rest of the hours when season ends on April 12th. Every time I go in and observe, I feel more and more like I belong. The staff is very friendly towards me and doesn't treat me like person that just gets in the way. They ask me to sit in on evaluations they think are "cool" and allow me to help out more on the floor rather than in the laundry room, where I was before. The staff also share stories about their life outside of work, which shows that they too can have a life and have fun outside of work.
As far as this last week's observations, last tuesday I observed 5 shoulder, 4 wrist, 1 hip, 2 neck, 1 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and 2 lower back injuries. This was the most variety of injuries I have seen since starting my internship at MAC PT. Usually I only witness a few wrists and shoulders and find other things to do around the clinic such as refill bottles of supplies, clean grastech tools or clean rooms for the next patient. Also this past week, I was able to help out my supervisor in recording information on evaluations sheets while she took measurements of flexion and extension at the knee and hip joints. This made me feel like her assistant and made me feel like she trusted me with important information. Hopefully this next week will be just as eventful in variety of injuries.

Springing Forward
Hello my fellow interns!
I hope everyone is kicking their midterm's butts and getting ready for Spring Break! I know I am. I'm finally feeling comfortable at Cupcake Couture and trying to find ways to take on more responsibility.
I've recently had the chance to complete my first project and it was really fun. Sam, my boss had me visit the other boutiques in the area and pay attention to not only the clothing, but the atomosphere, the way the merchandise was displayed, and the customer service. I really enjoyed this project because I never have the chance to just go on 3rd Street and browse and not have to rush. Plus, what girl doesn't love to shop as a class project? Oh, and I was interviewed by a Portland newscaster while I was down there! I paid a lot of attention to the merchandising and the customer service because in a small town customer service is vital. Word can travel about your business faster than any of us realize. I had the opportunity to learn more about how people can perceive your business and I can carry that into the future.
Also, today I just found out that a woman wants us to participate in a fashion show for McMinnville newcomers and I'm hoping Sam will take part in that and I may have the chance to help style the outfits and possibly create a description of the outfits.
We continue to get in pops of spring and I'm loving the bright colors! So I urge you all to come in and say hi!
Have a great rest of your week! And stay safe this St. Patty's Day!

Mass moblization of Latino community
This week the organization I am interning at had a bus tour throughout central Oregon, up to Washington, and into Idaho. The bus tour was to raise awareness about the need for a comprehensive immigration reform for 11 million undocumented immigrants. I did not go on the tour because it was a week long tour and I couldn't miss school. The bus tour had series of marches and rallies held in the multiple cities it stopped in. I was very sadden to hear back that on the first night after the kick-off rally in Bend, the church that hosted the bus riders was set on fire. The church facilities and a couple cars were set on fire shortly after midnight that night, something that I personally believe was not coincidental. It pushed me to really reflect on the impact that Causa's work is creating in people's mindset. For one, the bus tour was a success for supporters; but for others, the activism we are doing is apparently not welcome.
Meanwhile the tour was happening, I was assigned to mobilize close to 600 Latinos in Oregon who are affiliated with Causa. I called our affiliates and asked for their help advocating for legislation that would benefit them. I asked them to call four legislators in leadership positions at the state legislature and one Oregon member of Congress. The majority of the people I talked to were very warm and more than willing to make phone calls to the legislators' offices. I did however have experiences where some people sounded reluctant to call and for those I had to persuade them. I had to frame the phone calls in a way that sounded like a very simple task to do, something that wouldn't take much time out of their day. I realized that in the Latino community, we often hesitate to get politically involved because we are not familiar with the political process of a bill and we might think we are not capable of being activists. After explaining to the hesitant people how fast and easy the phone calls are, I was happy to hear them say that they were going to get others to call as well.
I think that sometimes when we think about politics we imagine a long drawn process that has to occur in order for "things to get done". Especially with Latinos, it can be that we see our personal beliefs as powerless and not useful. It is important for people to know however that while one person's voice may not move mountains, a shared concern does make a difference. I have been in meetings where we bring constituents to meetings with legislators outside their district. Even though it is just one or two persons asking for the legislator's support on an issue, I have seen that the mere fact that they are there really moves a legislator's opinion and I have heard legislators refer to conversations they have had with constituents about an issue.

Technical Tasting & Wine Making Tour
This weekend at Vista the three other interns and I got to experience a different side and very informative weekend. On Friday the four of us, including two of our supervisors Ryan and Adam took a field trip down the road to White Rose Winery and Vineyard. They are located about a 1/4 or a mile away from Vista Hills. There, we tasted the three wines on their tasting flight then moved outside to meet with Jesus, their wine maker at White Rose. Jesus walked us through the vines, explaining his process of wine making. From there we moved inside the cellar where the wine is actually made and then into the barrel room where we were allowed to try different wines that had not been bottled yet. It was very interesting and exciting to learn more about the wine making process and see how some of our particular wines that are sold at Vista are made.
On Sunday the four interns partook in a technical tasting led by our general manager, Dave. Dave invited 32 club members to come in to our tasting room and taste 6 different wines. While the members were trying the wines, Dave gave a detailed background on Vista and how he became the manger at this vineyard. He also went into detail about the 6 different wines that were being tasted. This gave the interns a chance to listen to the expert explain the wines so we are more knowledgeable when selling the wines to customers who are not familiar with our particular wines. Overall, a very good weekend - even though I was deathly sick! I enjoyed myself and am pleased to be learning more about the wine industry.

Turkey Trots and Leadership Events
Hello all!
These past few weeks my internship has been focusing on LeaderCast. It is a Leadership event that I am planning at the spirit mountain casino! Right now I am doing handwritten letters to business and people in the community selling tickets, along with finding sponsors for our event. It is pretty easy work, just can be time consuming with all of my homework. But... If any of you are interested in a Leadership event, you all are invited. :)
Have a great week!

Vista Sunday
Sunday at Vista Hills I worked a lot in the downstairs, cleaning out storage rooms, sweeping, changing lightbulbs, and counting for inventory. I learned a great deal about the behind the scenes of Vista Hills and the grunt work that needs to get done in order to keep a successful business running. I worked directly with my supervisor which gave us a chance to discuss the upcoming events at Vista Hills. Ryan mentioned to me that I should be able to help plan an event with him that is occurring in Portland this April. I hope that I get to capitalize on this opportunity and network as much as I can. I am still enjoying my experiences at Vista and like that I am getting to work a variety of tasks each day I go in is different and exciting. This coming weekend we have a Technical Tasting and a Winery tour of surrounding vineyards - the rundown of these coming experiences to come!!

Meetings with Legislators
This week another intern and I attended meetings for the first time without Causa's Executive Director or the lead Policy Organizer. We had been going to many meetings before with both or one of them but because they have multiple duties within the organization there have been times when they cannot be with us. At first I was very nervous to be on my own in these meetings because I have not yet learned everything about the process of getting a bill to pass in the legislature. Some legislators ask where the bill is going to be "dropped" (introduced in the House or Senate), what is the LC number (legislative concept), what committee is it going to be under, who is going to sponsor it, etc. Not to mention having to answer questions about the particular language of the bill or giving answers as to what would best work for the 160,000 Oregonians that would benefit from this bill we are lobbying for. It is a lot of pressure to say the right things to persuade key legislators to support a bill! I must say though that I am extremely proud of myself for my performance on Friday during a meeting with a Representative that I was warned about prior to the appointment. I was told he was not moveable on this issue and that he would likely not be willing to hear us, but the meeting turned out to be okay. I was able to bring 6 of his constituents that I met when I attended a luncheon for a county political party gathering. The Representative was very attentive to his constituents' concerns and was very transparent about his position on the issue. Being in as many meetings as I have been in so far, being direct is a very respectable trait for a person in public office. Even though he was not initially supportive of the issue, I was glad he took my recommendation of talking to other Representatives in his caucus about the issue. Hopefully, his caucus members are able to persuade him into being more open-minded.

Wedding Time!
This past Saturday the 23rd I worked my first wedding at Vista Hills. I was extremely excited to see what responsibilities I would be in charge of during this event. I had previously told our event coordinator, Cat, that I was interested in events so she let me shadow her during the day as the event unfolded. What was interesting was the tasting room was open till five that day so getting set up for the wedding reception was a bit of a hassle since Vista Hills was still operating under normal working hours. Needles to say, the wedding reception started on time without a hitch and my main responsibility was to work the downstairs bar. It was an open bar so the flow of the night went smoothly. I had a great time talking to different guests and partaking in such a beautiful night for this young couple. I also worked with the other three interns for the first time and together as a team we excelled to the best of our ability. Overall, this was by far my favorite time working at Vista Hills thus far and I am looking forward to the next event as the weather gets warmer.
Spring Internship with A Turf
Hi fellow interns,
My name is Kyle Wright, I am a junior Management major and defensive captain of the football team here at Linfield(#10). I am interning with A Turf inc. this spring doing market research. I am very excited to work under Vice President Rob Gloeckner and to work for a very large company. For my internship I will be working on a project gathering all schools in the west coast(Washington, Oregon, California) with an athletic field. I will be contacting each school and gathering data about the athletic field they currently have, if it is turf, and if they don't have turf, what is keeping them from getting it. I will reporting my research monthly in Portland at Rob's office. This is going to be a great opportunity to grow my professional and high-level sales skills while building my resume and getting involved firsthand in the business world.
I have already begun my research, I have built an excel template which turned out to be very tricky. I have also had a hard time sorting out schools without athletic teams. I have a meeting with Rob in Portland later this week to refine my excel sheet and to spend some time in the office.
I look forward to reading more about everyone's internships, some people really got some great opportunities!!

Causa's benchmark achievement in Oregon!
I am very happy to announce that HB2787 this week was voted out of committee and voted for in the House of Representatives this Friday.
I was watching the Representatives on the floor during the vote for the passage of the bill. It was a very emotional moment as an undocumented student. While I will not benefit from the bill because Linfield is one of very few schools that offers in-state tuition to undocumented students, I know what it is like to dream of going to college but having barrier after barrier placed before you.
There were other students, organizations, and supporters present during the vote anxiously waiting to see what the final vote would be. We listened to the testimonies of Representatives who support and do not support the bill. Representative Dembrow was the person who pushed forward this bill and has been involved in the movement to give undocumented students a chance at their dreams. Tuition Equity has been attempted to pass in the legislature for 10 years now. I was very happy to see two Latino legislators on the floor, Representative Jessica Vega Pederson and Representative Joe Gallegos! Both of whom had very moving personal testimonies of the power a higher education has impacted them as first generation college graduates. I was especially touched by Representative Betty Komp's testimony in which she mentioned the value of immigrant labor and the friendships she developed with her workers during the hardest times of her life. I remember she said, " At one point, I didn't have anything to eat but they fed me". She said, "These immigrants took care of me, now it's our turn to take care of their children".
It was heartbreaking to see a son of an immigrant father testify and vote against the bill, but that's okay because the bill passed!!!! It was the best feeling in the world to see the final vote count on the screen: 38 votes in favor and 18 votes against. I joined the movement to advocate for the bill at a later stage, but I am so incredibly grateful to have been part of the struggle to make this bill a reality. Now, the bill will go to the Senate for a vote. We will continue to advocate for Tuition Equity until the day it is officially Oregon law!

A little about me and my internship
Hi, all
I just became a senior this Jan. Term and I am majoring in Political Science. Aside from being a student, I am also a mom. I have a son who is two years old, his name is Jayden Alexander and he is the cutest boy in the world! I was born in Mexico but was raised here in Oregon since I was nine months old.
This past fall I interned with a non-profit named Causa. It is Oregon's immigrant rights organization and the largest Latino advocacy group in the Northwest. During my first internship with them I helped organize community events throughout Oregon to help non-citizen immigrants apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival. It is an Executive Order that President Obama announced on June 15, 2012. Causa held pre-screening clinics to start the application process in which close to 300 persons attended per clinic.
This spring I am doing a second internship with Causa. My duties this time around have been to schedule appointments with all of Oregon's state legislators and federal legislators. We are meeting with all 97 legislators because there are 3 key issues that the organization is going to be advocating for. At the state level, we are advocating for a tuition equity bill and drivers license bill. Tuition equity would allow undocumented youth to pay for school at in-state costs, instead of the international rate we are currently charged. The drivers license bill would restore the 2007 requirements to get an ID or drivers license in place of today's requirements. This bill is our priority at the state level because immigrants who do not have proof of legal status do not fulfill the requirements. If we do not pass a bill like this by 2014 there will be 80,000 drivers in Oregon without a license or car insurance. At the federal level, we are advocating for a comprehensive immigration reform that would legalize all 11 million undocumented immigrants and create a path to citizenship.
I have already attended meetings with state and federal legislators and I feel very lucky to have done so. My dream is to become Oregon's first Latina federal Senator and this has been a great experience to see what a career like that entails. Some of the meetings have been great and we have received the reactions we had hoped to hear, but we have also been in meetings where the legislator is not supportive. It shows that one cannot change a legislator's mind on an issue with one meeting, and sometimes many meetings won't make a difference either. Sometimes the legislator's personal opinions will never let them move on a subject no matter what good of an argument you present to them.

My Start at Vista!
Hello fellow Linfield Interns! My name is Alayna Martin and I began my internship at Vista Hills this January!
I have only worked a few days, but am already loving the atmosphere at the Vineyard. I have worked a variety of jobs including tasting room, club shipments, RTV tours, credit card transactions and event set ups.
I was extremely afraid and nervous on my first day when the employees at Vista Hills just through me into the tasting room with no previous knowledge of the wines or how the process works!! But I am quickly adapting to the fast paced atmosphere and enjoy being part of such an amazing team at Vista.
I am working my first wedding this coming Saturday so stay tuned for a detailed recap of my experience next week!

Start of Spring!
Hello fellow interns!
I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Jan Term break - it's great to be back on Campus! I am anxious to get back into the swing of things at Robert Roe! I can't wait to start my internship hours and start helping my boss plan and host as many events as possible. With the start of spring means new looks, new pieces, and a new look book! In the winter we found posting pictures of our favorite Robert Roe pieces and outfits really brought in customers, and I can't wait to do the same for Spring! I have tons of new ideas as ways of spreading Robert Roe and I look forward to get started. I want to focus on social media more, and really pump up our Instagram. Facebook hasn't proven to be as effective, I don't find that many people have found our page as helpful. However I am pleased to see that the Instagram is still popular, and hosts many pictures of the store.
I look forward to getting into the store after such a long break, and making things happen!

A little about Tayler!
Hello there!
I'm Tayler Herman and I'm one of the newest interns at Cupcake Couture! I'm a sophomore majoring in Marketing here at Linfield. My first couple of days at Cupcake were last week and it was a lot to take in for two days, but I know after a couple of weeks I'll be more into my groove there.
I love fashion, business, and marketing. Cupcake is a great way to begin my slow journey into fashion. I'm going to have a bit on my plate this semester because I'm a member of Phi Sig, I work at Great Harvest, and will be taking full time classes. It will be a time management challenge, but I think that will be a wonderful learning experience for me!
I worked on Thursday and Friday last week and Thursday was a little slow, but Friday definitely picked up and I actually got to make a couple of sales. My short term goals are to get to know the merchandise better so I can guide customers to exactly what they are looking for. There is no greater joy I feel in this world than helping others look and feel wonderful. Everyone deserves to feel special in what they're wearing and the clothes at Cupcake will definitely make you feel that way! Oh and by the way, we have a 50% off rack at the store so I suggest all you ladies come in! And boys if you're looking for something for that special lady in your life :)
Hope everyone has a fantastic first week of school!

Wrapping Up
So Jan term is over and I've seen a lot going on in the Emergency Department this past week. A lot of young children with the flu, a teenager hit by a car, two strokes. A really important part of this whole process for me was to see medical traumas and feel more "comfortable"in that environment. Understandably, it should be shocking to see these sorts of traumas up close, but if I am going to someday work in this environment I need to have a level of tolerance to that shock. I still have some more hours for my internship and I will continue volunteering even after my hours have been completed. A few of the nurses have started to tell me when major things are happening in the ED rather than me having to always ask and keep my eyes peeled. It feels as though it's taken a while to get to that point with the nurses, and I don't want to lose it now that my internship is almost over! We'll see what else I'll get to experience.
Until next time!

Hi Interns,
My Jan term has been pretty busy...it's unreal that it is almost over! I've been spending time in both the ER and Medical/Surgical unit which has kept my shifts really busy. I've been really happy with having the time during January term to spend lots of hours and late nights getting experience. My favorite Med/Surg time is just handing out meal trays to patients. It seems simple but I really enjoy the patient interaction. Most of the patients don't say much but there is almost always at least one patient that will further a conversation with me. It's mostly older people who will ask why I'm spending time there, what I'm going to school for, and it's just fun carrying on conversations with them. I've been observing a lot recently in the ER. Spending so much time there, I have learned the nurses' names and feel a lot more comfortable asking if I can observe with them. I don't think I would be getting the experience I have been if I wouldn't have spend the majority of my internship during Jan term. The nurses are at such a fast pace, it really takes a while before they even know your name. It's been a lot of really small but important accomplishments I''ve achieved over the term and each shift gives me more confidence that I'm headed in the right direction with my future career.

Last Cupcake update until spring
Hello Interns!
I hope you all have had a good Jan term so far! I can't believe this is the last week of Jan Term! This month went by so fast but I am excited for the break and to go back to California and see my family. I am excited to start spring semester in 2 weeks and I know that spring semester will go by so fast aslo.
Things at Cupcake have been the same. I worked Friday and Saturday and for a couple hours today. Saturday was busier then Friday or today. This was the last day I work until spring semester. I have also become closer with my co-worker, Jessica. She is really fun and easy to get along with. I feel that I have come so far in learning about how to work in retail. It;s been 4 months since I started working here and I am so grateful for this opportunity. I have learned so much about customer service, how to own a small business, how to order clothes, and how to owrk the cash register. Before this internship I didn't know anything about working in a store, or working anywhere. Now luckily I have experience in retail which could help me when looking for jobs in the future.
We have soe spring clothes here in Cupcake which is exciting but I think most of the spring inventory will be here in a month or so. Hopefully it will warm up sooner rather than later.
Anyways, that's all the updates about Cupcake!
See you in the spring!

Hello January!
Hello fellow interns!
This is my first blog for January! Can't believe we are already nearing the end of Jan Term! I have had a great experience these past few weeks both in my Sports Management course and at Robert Roe. Our Instagram is doing really well, there are new looks posted right now that seem to be generating a lot of positive feedback. Overall right now I am struggling to find how I can best be effective at an intern and employee at Robert Roe. We've had a great selling month, it seems that every time I work we sell some awesome pieces!
I am starting to work with a member of my sorority now to get Robert Roe involved with Red Dress Gala, our big charity event. Red Dress is an event we host every year to raise funds and awareness for our philanthropy - cardiac care for women. Heart disease is the number one killer of women today, so as strong female leaders in our community it's our goal to spread the word! I hope to organize a little basket that Robert Roe can donate - not only to help out a good cause but to get our name out there further in the community!
That's all for now!

January Cupcake Updates
Hello all,
I hope everyoneis keeping warm in this freezing cold weather! I know that I am definitely looking forward to some warm and sunny weather eventually. And I hope all of you had a great first half of Jan Term if you're on campus taking a class and if not, I hope you had a relaxing past 2 weeks. I can't believe Jan Term is already half over! Time flies!
Things at Cupcake have been going really well! Even though things are sometimes slow, we manage to end up selling a lot of inverntory, especially this past weekend! I worked from 2 until closing on Friday and all day on Saturday. Even though that my coworker Jessica and I were unaware the locks were changed Saturday morning, we managed to call another coworker to let us in. And now I have the right key fortunately. I completed my project of picking out new spring clothing for the store this past weekend which was really fun! I enjoyed looking through the new spring lookbooks and picking out pieces that would compliment each other.
So things have been great here and I'm loving working here!

Willamette Valley Medical Center
Hi Fellow Interns,
I am back for Jan term with the sole purpose of completing my internship at Willamette Valley Medical Center. I was able to put in a few hours each week during Fall term but now I am really looking forward to be able to put in long days at the hospital. This past week I was trained to work on the Medical/Surgical floor. Now I have more options to spend time in either the Emergency Department or the Med/Surg floor. I like to keep busy, so it's nice to have more responsibilities and tasks while I'm there. So far, I have kept busy with the various tasks but have not had as much patient interaction or seen as many medical events as I would like. From what I have heard, I shouldn't expect too much from the Med/Surg floor but the ED should be more exciting. During Jan term, I'll be able to spend some late nights in the ED and hopefully see some more emergencies. It's horrible to say that I want the ED to be busy when I'm in there...but I really do so that I can see some of those patient/nurse/doctor interactions during the chaotic times of medical emergencies. Ultimately I would like to get a real feel whether or not I would like to be working in that environment someday.
I'll keep you updated on how it's going!

1st January Cupcake Update
Hello all!
I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing winter break! The break came and went way to fast at least for me, but I am excited to be back at school with my friends for Jan Term. Since I only have class Tuesday-Thursday I have more time to work at Cupcake. So for this month, I will be working on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Last Monday I was excited to go back to work at Cupcake. It was pretty slow but still, I liked being able to be there and do something productive. Sam gave me a project due at the end of the month. She gave me a Jack and BB Dakota spring line catalogues. They are both brands Cupcake sells and my task is to pick out clothes from the catalogues that I would want to see in the store for spring. My budget is $1500 and I was instructed to pick clothes for the spring that tell a story and look good on a rack together. I'm very excited to pick some clothes for spring and to go through and look and BB Dakota and Jack's spring line of clothes.
I can't wait for all of the new spring apparel to arrive at Cupcake! Even though it is still freezing and cloudy outside and currently snowing as I write this, I am still excited to see what cute spring clothes Cupcake will have.
Hope everyone had a good weekend and I hope everyone has a great week ahead!
